A urine testing kit is created to detect illicit (or sometimes prescription) drugs.
How is it done?
First of all, a midstream urine sample must be collected from the patient. In order to get a sample from boys or men, the head of the penis should be wiped with a moist cloth. To collect sample from girls or women, they need to wash the area around the lips of the vagina with water and soap.
A patient should first clear the urethra with contaminants by letting some amount of urine to fall into the toilet bowl. In a clean bottle, catch around 1-2 oz of urine. Submit the specimen bottle to the health professional you are working with.
You will be asked to take off all of your personal things and wear only a hospital gown. Then, you will be placed in a room away from water and your personal items. This is to ensure that you will not be able to dilute your urine or use another person’s urine for the urine test.
The urine is then evaluated in the laboratory.
A urine test is done in order to identify presence of some drugs in the urine, which can indicate fresh use of drugs. When the result of the urine test is negative, it simply means that there are no drugs in the urine. When the result of the urine testing is positive, it would be helpful if it will be confirmed using gas-chromatography mass spectrometry. In other cases, a urine test can register a false positive. Some common reasons for false positives in urine testing are certain foods, other drugs or prescription medication. Gas-chromatography mass spectrometry will help confirm if it is a true positive that results due to the presence of illicit drugs.
Drugs Found in Urine Testing
Here are some drugs which can be detected using a urine test.
- Anabolic steroid
- Codeine, Morphine and other opiates or narcotics.
Some drugs listed here can be legally obtained through a doctor’s prescription. It is essential that you ask advice from the doctor if you should discontinue the drugs before a urine testing. You can also ask a written confirmation from your doctor to inform your employers that you are legitimately taking drugs for medical reasons. But as always, it would be better for anyone to stay away from drugs.
Some people wonder if it is possible to get a positive result in a urine test due to contact with a drug such as through inhaling second hand smoke from marijuana. From the results in urine testing, there are cut off levels that specify the amount of substance that should be found in a sample in order to declare a urine test result as positive. Accidental contact shouldn’t result to a positive urine test result that will cause concern. Also, if a person tests positive in a urine testing, a confirmatory test should be done to validate the results.
